Understanding Root Disease

 Keeping your oak trees healthy starts with understanding the threats they face. One of the most destructive—and often hidden—diseases affecting oaks in Missouri is Armillaria Root Disease, a fungal infection that attacks trees from the ground up. 

🌳 What Is Armillaria Root Disease?

Armillaria is a soil‑borne fungus that infects tree roots and lower trunks. It spreads slowly underground, often going unnoticed for years until the tree begins to decline. Oaks are especially vulnerable, and once infected, the disease can compromise the tree’s stability and long‑term health.

This fungus thrives in Missouri’s climate and can persist in old root systems for decades, making early detection essential.

🍄 Key Signs of Armillaria in Oak Trees

Recognizing symptoms early can help prevent hazards and further spread.

  • Mushroom Clusters — Honey‑colored mushrooms at the base of the tree, usually in fall
  • White Mycelial Fans — White, fan‑shaped fungal growth under the bark near the roots
  • Crown Dieback — Thinning leaves, dead branches, or reduced growth
  • Resin or Sap Bleeding — Oozing at the lower trunk
  • Loose or Decayed Bark — Bark separating from the wood near the soil line
  • Sudden Tree Failure — In advanced cases, infected trees may fall without warning

🌲 How Armillaria Spreads

Armillaria spreads through:

  • Root‑to‑root contact between infected and healthy trees
  • Old stumps and buried roots that harbor the fungus
  • Moist, compacted soil that stresses tree roots

Because the fungus lives underground, it can move slowly across a property, infecting multiple trees over time.

  • Mycelial fans beneath the bark
  • Decay patterns in the root collar
  • Structural weakness
  • Soil and moisture conditions

Accurate diagnosis is essential for determining whether the tree can be saved or needs removal.

While Armillaria cannot be completely eliminated from the soil, proper management can slow its progression and protect nearby trees.

  • Improve Soil Drainage — Reduces stress and root rot risk
  • Remove Infected Trees — Prevents spread to healthy oaks
  • Stump Grinding — Helps remove infected root material
  • Mulching & Watering — Supports tree vigor and resistance
  • Root Collar Excavation — Exposes infected areas to slow fungal growth

In some cases, removal is the safest option—especially when structural stability is compromised.
